SECOND CHANCES: EMPTY CAGE

The first question I ask myself when something doesn’t seem to be beautiful is why do I think it’s not beautiful.  And very shortly you discover that there is no reason.  -John Cage

John Cage's writings on beauty continue to fascinate me.  In this film, I explored the sensory experience of viewing a John Cage performance. Through camera movement, the film’s viewer moves through the room as one's mind might during a live performance. Clearly, subjective, my intent was one of discovery. The remarkable hour and a half performance was part of the opening night of "Nothingtoseeness: The Visual Art of John Cage," performed by Stephen Dueweke and presented by Center Galleries, College for Creative Studies, Detroit, Michigan. Additional performance contributors were Matthew Smith on guitar and Moog synthesizer, and Nicole Ross, dance.
